Austin is proving to be a Mecca of innovators and risk-takers. The Kauffman Index, compiled by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, is a key measurement of entrepreneurship levels on national, state and metropolitan gauges. By looking at three key metrics – the rate of new businesspersons, the number of entrepreneurs who started their companies when unemployed, and the per capita number of startups – they develop an annual gauge. For the Austin area, notes Marcus Hiles, the data displays roughly 555 out of every 100,000 adults becaming entrepreneurs in any given month over the past five years, on average. They rank Austin’s startup rate at 180 new businesses – less than a year old and employing at least one other person in addition to the owner – per 100,000 residents.
